Sacconi Quartet

Influences on Britten

Saturday 29 June 2013 7.30pm - Tithe Barn Gallery

  • Shostakovich - Two Pieces for string quartet (1931)
  • Haydn - String Quartet in F minor Op. 20, No.5
  • Bridge - Three Novelletten for String Quartet
  • Britten - String Quartet No. 2 in C

We celebrate Britten at 100 with music from the composers that influenced him, culminating in his deeply emotional second quartet, written during the second world war.  We open the programme with Shostokovich’s Two Pieces, the first achingly beautiful and the second naughtily witty, then segue into Haydn’s dark F minor quartet.  Both of these composers carry us back and forth between the depths of despair and sheer elation, as Britten does with such power in his second quartet.  Bridge’s exquisite Three Novelletten, three beautiful vignettes in sound, were his first foray into the string quartet.

Tickets: £12 (child/student £5) includes interval refreshments
