Teenagers Take to Print

Trust tutors devised mobile printing workshops for St Pauls School in the heart of Balsall Heath. Pupils had first tried their hands at printing at The Rodd last summer and enjoyed the process so much that the art teacher Jill Harkin invited us to run workshops at the school. The workshops were tailored to the needs of individual pupils working in small groups to give them the maximum benefit from the sessions.

The Trust has recently acquired a small ‘nipping press’ originally intended for book binding and a beautiful etching press which were perfect for the workshops. We set up in the school's characterful Victorian art room which Jill has filled floor to ceiling with the pupils' colourful work.

Tutors Jackie Morris (Jackie has for several years attended print courses at The Rodd) and Tony Hall introduced pupils to the immediate process of nonprinting with found objects whetting their appetite for the more intricate process of collagraph using the etching press.

The pupils aged 1 4-16 took to these new  processes creating a block for their collagraphs - mark making, inking up and running through the press .They worked well with our tutors absorbing all they were taught  and working carefully and confidently with their newfound skills.

The workshop has initiated an ongoing piece of work with pupils’ taking their GCSE in Art making up plates, sending them to The Trust to be printed and returned ready for their assessments. It is wonderful to see the work progress and our young print makers grow in creative confidence.

The workshops  are funded by the Ernest Cook Trust
