Gadigal: Yilabara Wala

Kate Constantine is a Gadigal artist from the Eora nation. The Sidney Nolan Trust is delighted to be a partner in her latest project titled Gadigal: Yilabara Wala (Gadigal: Now and Then).

The project aims to bring to life the stories, artworks and traditional adornment of the Gadigal people by reclaiming the making practices through the study of objects in the British Museum archives, to which
Constantine has been granted unprecedented access.

These objects and treasures have been held by the British Museum since colonisation - some have never been seen by a living Gadigal person. The study of these objects will enable Constantine to make new objects with repatriated knowledge and relearned techniques from the historical artefacts.

The artist first spent time in residence at Nolan's final home, The Rodd, in 2022. She is currently delving deeper into Sidney Nolan’s work and archives including important books, photography and documents that Nolan used in unpicking and responding to colonial Australia’s injustice and violence towards Indigenous people that continues to this day.

The project will be presented through a major exhibition at The Rodd during summer 2025. To follow the project please click the button below.
