What if you consider hills not as just background but promoted centre stage as the subject for a work of art. And why have British landscape artists through the centuries so taken to the hills? These two questions form the argument for this illustrated talk, which is a gallop across hills from eighteenth century tourists in search of the picturesque to Land art of recent times right up to contemporary responses. It will consider why representations of hills in art have engaged with ideas from religion, history, nationality, identity and psychology.
